WHY I LOVE PALO DURO CANYON

No offense to the Grand Canyon, but I love how easy it is to access Palo Duro (not to mention the lack of crowds). While driving in from the western flatlands, suddenly a vast expanse opened before me with eons of history etched in the rocks from canyon floor to rim. One day, I walked amid towering red-rock pillars up to windswept lookouts unchanged by time. The next day, I rose just after dawn and spotted a coyote, a porcupine and abundant birdlife along a flat riverside trail. Going outside of summer meant seeing only a handful of visitors in the canyon, and it was easy to secure a prime camping spot.
